In July 2003, land-clearing operations for the "Cove on the Bay" development exposed abundant remains of a multi-component prehistoric occupation at the Danbury site (33Ot16). Initial amateur excavations were followed by more systematic salvage operations by Ohio Valley Archaeological Consultants, LTD. This work documented evidence of at least three significant occupations affiliated with the Early Woodland, Late Woodland (Western Basin Tradition), and Late Prehistoric (Sandusky Tradition) cultural periods. Preparations are underway for a more extensive salvage excavation in June and July 2004. This presentation will discuss preliminary results of the 2003 excavations and review research goals for 2004.
