The Ohio Archaeological Council’s Education Committee is pleased to announce that Ohio Archaeology Month again will be held in October. This year’s theme is Archaeology is Everywhere.
Ohio Archaeology Month is a statewide event to recognize and celebrate archaeology in Ohio. This will be the eleventh year for the event that consists of activities throughout the state from Cleveland to Cincinnati and Toledo to Marietta. Past programs include artifact exhibits, flint knapping and atlatl throwing demonstrations, guided archaeological site tours, lectures, excavation opportunities, artifact identification, and more. Since its inception in 2000, over 11,000 people have attended over 95 public events aimed at celebrating Ohio’s rich cultural heritage. We hope to continue this tradition of public outreach and make this year our best yet!
The Ohio Archaeological Council’s Education Committee is requesting programs/activities for Ohio Archaeology Month, October 2010. During this annual event, we are asking archaeological, cultural resource management, and historical organizations in Ohio to plan activities highlighting the archaeology of Ohio. Any form of activity that enhances our goals for the preservation and scientific study of the past through archaeology is appropriate. This may be the perfect time to highlight your regularly scheduled programs. Programs for the public should be described on the program form and be sure to include all pertinent information exactly as you would want it to appear on promotional materials. However, we reserve the right to limit (edit) submitted materials as space allows. In previous years, we had many events throughout the state where hundreds of people had up-close and personal experiences with archaeology that, hopefully, will be remembered for a lifetime.
Deadlines necessitate that we have your program information by August 21, 2010 at the latest for inclusion in the printed Calendar of Events. Each organization sponsoring a program will receive multiple copies of promotional materials (posters, calendar of events, etc.) as funding permits for distribution and posting in their location. These materials will be mailed out in September 2010. Local media (print, TV, radio, etc.) publicity will be the responsibility of each local organization. Copies of two generic public service announcements are provided at the end of Program Form. These may be used as is or adapted to your own activities.
We will be listing all events on the OAC website and we encourage you to list your activities on local websites. A Calendar of Events and extended Event Descriptions also will be listed on the OAC website. Please pass along this announcement to any other archaeological, cultural resource, and historical organizations who share our goals for the archaeology of Ohio that may not have received this request. Let us know to whom you forward this announcement, so that we may include them in future mailings.
Please mail or email your program application form or address any questions to Laura Segna, Chair of OAC Education Committee, Ohio Historic Preservation Office, Ohio Historical Society, 1982 Velma Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43211-2497; phone: 614-298-2000; email:
