New Approaches in Ohio Archaeology

Ohio Archaeological Council, Fall 2009 Conference, Newark, Ohio

Oct. 31-Nov. 1, Reese Center, Ohio State University-Newark

Call for Papers

The Ohio Archaeological Council (OAC) is hosting a conference this fall with a theme of New Approaches in Ohio Archaeology. This is a two-day conference (Saturday-Sunday) with a banquet and keynote speaker on Saturday evening, and a Saturday afternoon session and panel discussion on why, when, and where geophysical survey is necessary to make a reasonable and good faith effort to identify important archaeological sites.

The OAC is seeking papers/presentations on topics related to new approaches. While we would prefer that these papers focus on Ohio archaeology, we will consider submissions with examples from other states with applicability in Ohio. Suggested topics for papers/presentations include but are not limited to: Residue Analysis; Paleoethnobotany (e.g., starch, phytoliths, pollen); Sourcing Analysis; Geoarchaeology (e.g., micromorphology or using geomorphology to inform testing strategies); GIS in Archaeology; Geophysics in Archaeology; New Approaches in Museum Settings; etc. While we would like to receive a variety of submissions that showcase examples of the applications of new approaches, we would also like presenters to provide information on why they chose to use the new approach, did the new approach achieve the objectives of its use, and was the new approach a cost effective solution for the intended objective. Papers will be 20-30 mins in length depending on the number of submissions.

To be considered for the conference, please submit a 250-300 word abstract to: Jarrod Burks, President-elect, OAC at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it by August 15th. Abstracts will be reviewed within one week of the submission deadline by the conference committee. A formal conference announcement and registration information will be sent out soon.

Monday, 08 June 2009
CMNH Archaeology Day 2008The Ohio Archaeological Council's Education Committee is pleased to announce that Ohio Archaeology Month again will be held in October of this year. This is a statewide event to recognize and celebrate archaeology in Ohio. This will be the ninth year for the event that consists of activities throughout the state from Cleveland to Cincinnati and Toledo to Marietta. Past programs include artifact exhibits, flint knapping and atlatl throwing demonstrations, guided archaeological site tours, lectures, excavation opportunities, artifact identification, and more. Since its inception in 2000, over 12,000 people have attended over 100 public events aimed at celebrating Ohio's rich cultural heritage. We hope to continue this tradition of public outreach and make this year's event the best yet!

I am extending an invitation to all members of the archaeological, museum, and heritage tourism communities to participate in this year’s activities by hosting an event during the month of October or supporting our efforts by attending an event in your area.

Download the information packet for hosting events, including the event form that you can complete and email to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please send your event listings for Ohio Archaeology Month by August 15, 2009. The program of events will be posted on the OAC website at the beginning of September. Labor Day Knap-In at Flint Ridge
Written by Brian Redmond
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

Replica points made by Roy MillerThis year the famous Labor Day Knap-In will be held at Flint Ridge State Memorial.  Step back into prehistory and witness accomplished flintknappers create modern replicas of flaked stone tools utilizing many of the same production methods used by humans for thousands of years.  You will see various knapping methods, which employ the use of hammer stones, antler and bone, and also more modern materials such as copper, to produce precise recreations of spears, knives and arrowheads.  Visit the historic Flint Ridge State Memorial to see actual quarry pits dug by ancient people in quest of suitable flint material from which to make their tools, implements and weapons.

The event will take place on September 4, 5, and 6 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.  This  event is sponsored by the Flint Ridge Lithic Society and the Ohio Historical Society.
